No, I missed it. That was taken on the third day of the tournament, when we were messing around. By that point I had swollen arms, bruised ribs and bruised hips, so I was concentrating more on landing less painfully than usual than catching it.  |

I passed all my exams, got an average 2:1. Good news.
My knee is completely destroyed and I'm going to see a specialist about possible surgery. Bad news.

I guess a 2:1 would equate to a B.
Bit of a bizarre system, but unless it has changes in last 15 years the grading system at UK universities works as follows:
1st class honours degree (top 5%)
2:1 or Upper second class honours degree (next 35%)
2:2 or Lower second class honours degree (next 35%)
3rd class honours degree (next 5%)
Pass woithout honours (bottom 5% of passes)
Fail (last 5%: how did you get to university again?)
And I lost 10% somewhere ...
1st and 2:1 degrees are usually considered 'good', a 2:2 is considered 'acceptable'. Actually, at the uni i went to, most students were pretty happy with a 3rd 
As I say, being an old git might make this 15 years out-of-date, but that's more or less how I remember it

That's about right, except that hardly anyone fails any more - they just get given a pass degree in almost all cases. (In Durham this was called a recommended pass a.k.a. rowing pass or rugby pass.) According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the 2006 breakdown was as follows:
First - 11%
2:1 - 43.5%
2:2 - 30%
Third - 7%
Unclassified (I think this means pass degrees, not pass degrees and fails) - 8.5%
I was surprised by the last figure, but there are still some ordinary (i.e. non-honours) degrees available, so this would include those.
2:1 and 2:2 (or 2(i) and 2(ii)) mean upper second and lower second. They were split because too many people got seconds, but as you can see, these two classes have still got far more people in them each than in the others. There also used to be fourths, at least at some universities, but they got cancelled.
The percentages students need to achieve (sometimes by mean average, sometimes by median etc.) for each class are usually:
First - 70%
2:1 - 60%
2:2 - 50%
Third - 40%
Pass - 35%
Firsts and thirds/passes are therefore much more likely in science subjects. In arts subjects, most people aim for 2:1s. |

Big congrats on your exam results!
Really sorry to hear about the knee ... I know how horrible it is because I used to date a pro soccer player and his knee was smashed too. He needed three ops and it took over a year to heal. He was about 29 at the time, so youth may be on your side.
Please please please do what the docs tell you. But keep up your spirits because you will get to play the violin again :)

Well I was going to put a seperate post on this topic, but I think this will suffice. I am going back to university. I have been excepted for my masters in Information Technology. So I might not be around for a while, since this year is going to be hardcore studying and revising.

Thanks everyone. Turns out I don't need surgery, just a course of fairly intense (and expensive ) physio, so hopefully I should be OK in a couple of months.

I've been doing physio for about 4 weeks for various parts of my body. Anyway, I have been making great strides, so you should be back in shape in no time I suspect, shoon. Congratulations on your exams, too. Good luck to you too, mampers. |
