Yes, its called the brain gene. You've got to have at least half of one to contribute to FWFR.

A saw a news report last night about brain imaging showing that people predisposed to addiction have damage to a certain part of the brain.

It's only in the last few years that Massachusetts did away with blood tests as a prerequisite for a marriage license. I believe the specific reason cited was to alert two potential parents who might be carrying the Tay-Sachs gene...I'm not sure why that one hereditary illness was considered more "special" than any other that might show up in the test, like Huntington's (which is a dominant gene meaning only one parent has to have it to pass it on, unlike Tay-Sachs which both parents have to carry in order for the kid to develop it).

In his book "Faithful" (co-authored with Stewart O'Nan and a must-read for any diehard Sox fan) Stephen King describes addiction as "a loose spring in an old couch." He says if you try to push that spring back down after it pops up, you might succeed but another spring somewhere else on the couch will pop up instead. He used to be a serious boozer, but now that he's given that up he's hooked on baseball. Seriously.

He should've stuck with booze then.

Homer Simpson was once busted for DUI and was sentenced to 30 days participation in a sobriety program. One of the funniest moments of the episode is when he's sitting at a minor league baseball game and everyone around him is of course drinking beer and you hear the announcer giving play-by-play:

"The pitcher gets ready...and the batter asks for time...he's going to get a new bat...he's back and the pitcher is going for the resin bag...and now there's a beachball out on the field...and the groundskeepers are discussing which one of them is going to go get it..."

And Homer - for the first time in his life the only one at the ballpark without a beer - looks around and says, "I never realized how boring this game is."

It's hilarious, even for those of us who realize baseball is the greatest game ever invented by man. I think Prometheus might have stolen it from Olympus itself.
