Busy. Lots of horse training to do, as my horse training business is picking up.
My web programming freelancing is also keeping me busy momentarily, so in effect I am currently working two fulltime jobs. Been working lots of all-nighters.
So many ideas. So much fun. So much to do. So little time. |

| I went to work and had some down time, so I read the first chapter of From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters during some down time. In case some of you haven't heard of it, From Time Immemorial is a controversial 600+ page study from the 1980s that argues that many of the people who call themselves Palestinian refugees are not necessarily Palestinians from a historical/national point of view. I didn't like the self-important, unscholarly tone the author took in the first chapter, which only describes the thesis and is an extremely bold claim. It will require a lot of evidence in order for me to take it seriously. Still, the first chapter was interesting enough that I'd like to read further. |

The reviews of the book on Amazon.com are interesting.
Please let us know what you think after you have completed the reading. Do you think the thesis of the book is correct, or is it fabricated? Are its detractors merely being politically correct, or are they right?
I was amused to read the reports of Senator Kerry's gaffe. It seems to depend on one's political ideology as to whether they think the remark was a botched joke or a deliberate comment about the education of troops in Iraq.
Of course, the Republican ideologues are going to jump on it like a dog on a bone and the Dems are going to defend the remark. No, I don't think Kerry *intended* to insult the troops.
From a purely practical point of view, as one who doesn't give a sh*t about ideology, I think it is obvious that Kerry's remark was a slip of the tongue that once again revealed his elitist, narcissistic blue-blooded opinion of himself in comparison to us, the lowly peasants. (Nor do I think he has that attitude cornered.)
Got 6 truckloads of gravel delivered to the farm yesterday. My buddy Rob ran the tractor and spread it out; it is to be the base for a set of stall pens for horses. I did a previous set like that and it works really well; keeps horses up out of the mud and is good for their hooves. |

Yeah, I read the Amazon reviews as well. Most of the detractors are have only reviewed this one book (usually a sign of political motivation ... they most likely didn't read the book at all). Serious intellectuals and experts in the field of Middle Eastern history have questioned Peters's thesis, but many others have praised her research as an angle from which to look at the Palestinian refugee problem worthy of further study.
The origins of the Palestinian problem to the best of my understanding are the following: the Jews started emigrating to Palestine en masse after waves of anti-Semitism in Russia in the early 20th century, during which time the wealthier Jews legally bought land from the ruling Ottoman Turks and gave jobs to fellow Jews. By the time of the British Mandate, the economic disparities between Palestinians was perceived to be so large that riots both against Jews and upper class Arabs started to become common. In 1947, the U.N. partitioned the country into 2 states: one Jewish, one Arab. The Arabs rejected the Partition Plan while the Jews accepted. In 1948, David Ben Gurion declared the independence of the State of Israel and all hell broke loose. The two results of the War of Independence is the present-day State of Israel and the present-day Palestinian refugee problem.
As I said before, Peters's claim would require a sh*t load of convincing evidence in order to sway me into believing that many or most of the people claiming to be Palestinian refugees today were not really Palestinians since the time of the Ottoman empire. |

I got a speeding ticket today. I felt really, really rotten about it. NOt about speeding, (69 in a 55 zone) but about getting caught and now having to pay $120 for it. BLAh!!!! It wasn't my intention to speed, but I was anxious about getting back to the house and my foot was too heavy on the metal. I must give the cop credit for being kind and having a good sense of humor. "I've stopped lots of people going lots faster than you were. You didn't commit a crime."
So, at the farm this evening, when buddy Rob showed up with alcoholic German cider, it was like nectar from the gods. Thanks goodness I didn't have to drive home. Dee holds her liquor better than I, and she brought me home.
On the way home, we made snide comments about grouchy husbands (she is divorcing her husband who cheated on her), giggled, and hoped that her driving was up to par.
Then just a minute ago, Robert called me to make sure Dee got me home OK. She was headed to Wal Mart after dropping me off; hope she didn't spend too much money.
DH (the fartmeister whom I must photograph for the current avatar contest) just called. I didn't even know he wasn't in the house. He told me to warm up the oven cuz he's bringing home a couple of Papa Murphy's pizzas. Today has turned out OK after all. |

I'm on the treadmill of wake up before 6am and correct schoolwork, organise camp, start reports, go to school, get home, play taxi driver for the kids, do some more work in front of the TV (watching series 2 of Corner gas on DVD ), pick up the kids, do some more work, maybe jump on the site for 10 minutes and check emails before hitting the sack about 11pm. REPEAT ad nauseum.

Just having my worst working day in some time. We've just moved offices, I got stuck next to the one person I personally requested I didn't want to be sat next to (he has the most pointless conversations (but not in fun way) and takes pleasure in finding bugs in my code and shouting about it).
Oh... and my manager just bollocked me for working on fwfr.
During my lunch hour.
What an asshole.
It's hard to believe a couple of years back we used to play multiplayer games against each other. A year ago, I was still calling him a friend and skating with the guy.
Since he became management, it's hard to believe this is the same person anymore.
And I'm back to considering other employment opportunities again.
Needless to say, I'm writing this from the park |

Well, that just pisses me off. Doesn't he know I've got a whole bunch of movies I want you to add to the site here? And it must be cold outside.

Power can be an addiction. It's amazing how quickly people can change when they're given power over others. I've witnessed this before and the change (upon promotion) was instantaneous.
I don't think any totalitarian regime ever has any problem finding it's Gestapo / Securitate / AVO.

There's a great phrase in Hebrew we use for people who take their power too seriously. "HaSheten Alah Lo LaMoach." It translates to "his urine has gotten up into his brain".
Perfect, don't you think?

That all depends. If you want to be fired today, then yes. If you want to find another job before you get fired, then wait a bit.
