Seems like Kramer went off the deep end. Is he going way of Mel Gibson?

| He is a regular in the LA comic circuit and his act is pretty sad. I went to see a friend at the Comedy Store once and he was on the bill and he seems like a miserable unfunny man. This doesn't surprise me at all. |

Nope, Mel's antics have already been forgiven - or forgotten - by most of the public. Eventually, he'll get right back to where he was before. Richards's career, however, is now over. Insulting Jews gets you in temporary hot water. Insulting blacks is a career third rail. He's untouchable now. |

To be fair to Michael, no-one told him Black people were allowed to heckle a White performer.

| He should have stuck to playing with his toy soldiers on ABC's FRIDAYS series. He was hilarious... |

i saw a video of a comedian who called a woman in the audience a aunt (change one letter). then two women went on stage and physically attacked him. it's not cool for a comedian to use such venomous derogatory terms. neither is heckling. just leave. maybe somebody at the show is having a good time. don't ruin theirs. and if you wanna be a comedian and the best you can do to deal with hecklers is use the most vicious language you can think of, then that's probably not the biz for you. i've seen plenty of comedians dismantle hecklers much more effectively and less offensively. all that being said, Kramer is still one of tv's best supporting characters of all time. he's no Barney Fife or Ed Norton though.
that's my story and i'm sticking to it. |

As a fan of "Seinfeld," this story deeply saddens me. |

Seinfeld was on Letterman last night and persuaded his friend Michael Richards to apologize on the air via satellite. Not to defend his behavior, but Richards was clearly shaken up by the incident.
Later, Seinfeld revealed a timeworn tactic to dismiss somebody who's talking too loudly: shut up onstage and let the audience hear him. But once, the heckler not only refused to shut up, but threw a glass near Seinfeld's face...and it was the comedian who was bounced! He later learned that the club bouncers had a word with the offending gentleman and learned that he was a low-level mobster. Thus was the true pecking order revealed.
I still say Richards should have stuck to his toy soldiers on FRIDAYS. I'm laughing just thinking about it... |

Hey, I'd rank Kramer easily above Ed Norton and Barney Fife, and I've seen every episode of "The Honeymooners" and "Andy Griffith Show." In fact I'd rank Kramer on a virtual par with Maynard G. Krebs. Richards's tirade is deplorable, but Woody Allen has survived his bout with pedophilia to still be a bankable movie director. I have no problems determining which act creeps me out more.

I certainly agree that the Woody Allen thing is weird and shocking, but Soon-Yi was over 18, thus it was not pedophilia. Then again, who knows what happened that they kept privately. |

As someone who never "got" Seinfeld, I found Kramer to be one of the most annoying of characters I'd ever witnessed on TV. Of course, we often associate the person with the character - especially if the person plays that character for an extended period of time. I tend to believe that there must be a certain amount of that actor mingling into the character for them to consistantly and successfully play the character (with the exception of Carol O'Conner in "All in the Family" - but even he let his compassionate side through into Archie on occaision). Therefore, I found Richards to be annoying and even a bit disturbing. I wondered about his real mental health. This incident and the rest of this thread only confirms that my suspicions were probably not far off the mark. The man has problems, serious ones, and he needs help. I feel sorry for him, actually.
Gibson is just bad news and nasty.

Like it or not, a disturbed mind and comedy tend to go hand-in-hand, since the nature of comedy demands the kind of thought your average person doesn't think of, and the more extreme/ unusual/ dark/ twisted the ideas the better.
I've never seen Richards's stand-up, but from what I've seen from 'Seinfeld', he's a brilliant physical comedian. |

Yes and no. I think it's energy that makes a good comedian, not insanity. One of the very best physical comedians ever is probably Jerry Lewis, but I'd hardly call him mentally unbalanced (especially after his bouts with alcohol, etc.). Another one was Danny Kaye, who avoided the substance abuse and stayed stable. Of course, both of them worked tirelessly for charities and that probably was part of what kept them on an even keel - channeling their energies into something other than their comedy. Perhaps Richards needs a good hobby (after he has many good long sessions with a highly qualified psychiatrist).

I didn't say "insane", I said "disturbed". Sure it could push you the way of insanity, but it's the thought process I'm referring to. Yes, energy is a large part, but you still need the off-kilter ideas behind the energy.
Those are two comedians from a very different time. Of course, you can still perform that style of humour, but it seems quite tame in this day and age and won't have much of an impact on the average punter.
These days, if you ask people who their favourite comedian is/ was, you'll invariably get Pryor, Bruce or Hicks.
Oh... and best physical comedian ever (for my money) is Lee Evans |

Used to be, announcing that one was an addict (but headed to Betty Ford) was the fad. It appears that the latest trend is for celebrities to run their mouths off without engaging their brains first... wait, that's not new. And WHAT brains? |
