I detected that lemmy's tongue may have been firmly in his cheek when he wrote that. Although one may have been more likely to detect that if one was familiar with other discussions on punctuation over the years here.

Oooo.... don't get me started on the misuse of apostrophes

Presumably you meant apostrophe's.

I suspect it's because that's what the contraction sounds like: i.e. must/should/could've. A question of write what you hear instead of write what you read [IF you CAN read, that is ]

And, speaking of 'of' ... many Americans still announce the quarter hour before the hour with it, e.g.:
It's quarter of ten.

Funny old world, innit?

I'm sure you're right about the reason for could of etc.

Perhaps the of in quarter of ten is there to compensate for the lack of an of in 'it's only a couple of hours until lunch-time'.

Any else spot the irony in the misspelling of "authoritative" as "authoratitive" in reference to Anna Nicole Smith?

Thanks, Sen.

As a veteran, you are well aware of my propensity to give tongue in the FOURUM.

For the record, I recognize the OED as "authoritative", That's why I own it (the Compact Edition only I am afraid and since my eyes are not what they used to be I rarely consult it). I now have a link to Dictionary.com on my toolbar and that's what I usually use now if I don't pull my Canadian Oxford Dictionary off the shelf.

Here is my last word on gold diggers.

I think her baby girl is Lucky. She has 4 guys that think they are her father. No matter what, she will have money. If we never hear of her daughters name again...she should be so lucky.

Too bad they didn't have breast implants back in the days of the Titanic, doncha think?

(Pamela Anderson could saved hundreds of them, I tell ya!)

I hope we are agreeing that both are acceptable? I would imagine US fwfers would be happy that they can legitimately provide gold-digger as one word There is likely to be some consistency between US English NOT hyphenating compound nouns, and UK English doing so. Worth checking when you're reviewing

Yup, this sort of compound often has multiple options: it's not the sort of thing that I ever object to in people's reviews.
