I watched it - well, the second time MTv broadcast it. They are infamous for repeating it immediately. I like awards shows as a rule, but not always the youth oriented ones. I laughed quite a bit through it. The high points for me:
I like Sarah Silverman, despite herself. She's got the foulest mouth, but she's cute enough that it bounces off, plus she's an equal opportunity offender. Her stabs at Paris Hilton, her imminent incarceration and that her vagina will get a rest, as Paris sat in the audience with only the barest of smiles. As interesting was that she checked into jail by 11:30 the same night.
Johnny Depp. By now you all know I love Johnny. He knows this and accepts it with bemusement. (Well, I prefer to think that.) He was his usual hunky self and I was just happy to see him. The audience gave him a standing ovation which was cool. I am going to be so happy when the day comes that he wins an Academy Award, though I'm afraid Hollywood sees him as too much of an outsider. Maybe now that he has "made it" by Hollywood standards (being in a blockbuster) they'll remember him. For his part, he just thanked Disney for not firing him.
I'm one of the (apparent) minority that didn't much like Borat, so I was lukewarm with Sacha Baron Cohen winning Best Comedic Performance. I think it irritated me when felt the need to tell everyone he was an Englishman and then proceeded to update the audience on Borat's current activities. Maybe it was because he'd been on a couple talk shows where he insisted on doing the interview in character. However, he was part of one of the funniest moments of the night. He also won the award for best kiss, along with Will Ferrell. While they were accepting, a "why haven't you called me" conversation began and end with the two of them liplocked and rolling over each other on the floor. It was funny.
Jaden Smith (of Jada and Will) won for breakthrough performance and had a cute taped acceptance speech which involved dad, supposedly off camera, coaching him to say he couldn't be there because his sister was filming in Canada and now it was time for the family to support her, like they did him. He's a cutie.
The most out of place person of the night, Jack Nicholson, showed up to get his best villian award. Meanwhile, the blandest person of the night, Mike Myers, received a Generation Award. I'm not sure about that either, I don't think of him as the representative of MY generation. I think the last time I laughed at one of his films was in So I Married An Axe Murderer.
The winners of The Orbit Dirtiest Mouth Moment, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, were on hand to accept their award for Clerks II. It was more like Bob and Silent Jay, though, as mysteriously, the usually loquacious Mewes didn't say a word. And he looked straight.
All in all, the funniest part of the night were the showing of the parody award nominees. They were a hoot. I'm sure they are up on YouTube by now.
So that's the awards, TitanPA, as I saw them. |
