Hi Browser Boffins
Hoping someone's got sufficient tekkie-ness to help with an IE7 problem. Just because I thought it would be a good idea to test my client websites on this version I downloaded it and now it's not only crashing after a few page changes, but it's implanted some crash seed in Slimbrowser, too. Sites load ok, behave ok, then BOOM, total death
Firefox still works just fine. And yes, I did download the IE7 version that's supposed to be Google-friendly. So, any wise words? Is there an even more-stable version? Am I supposed to do a separate 'service pack' download?
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on a pretty darn good pc.
Okay, I know this isn't a tekkie forum, but some of you are good at this game, so I thought I'd ask pals b4 heading for strangers
All help gratefully received TIA CrashedBabe

No idea at all, although I have heard these "crash seeds" referred to as "computer viruses". Give your computer a good scrub down. And isn't it always a good idea to check whether there are any updates or service packs from MS?!
However, if you download the add-on IE Tab for Firefox it will allow you to emulate IE in Firefox. I'm not entirely sure if it emulates IE6 or IE7 though. It will probably say somewhere. And it may not be a great idea to rely entirely on its emulation, but it may help you out short-term.

Thanks, Whippy, but as ya know I've got a small army of mutually-compatible anti-badguy software which I update and run on a regular basis. I've tried the IE Firefox tab, but not rigorously enuf and will do so soon. Meanwhile I've revived IE 6, but that seems now to have caught the 'bug.'
I'll keep searching the sky, but if anyone actually knows why this might be happening ... I'm Gertie Grateful!

As Whippy said, I'd go to Windows Update and make sure you've got every update and patch. IE7 had a few bugs when it came out (it still does have some I think) but most of them have been patched.
There's not much point doing anything else until you've got the updates.
What's your full version description? E.g., mine is 7.0.5730.11. |

You guys are SWEET [said in my best Cartman voice ] ... I think I've got all the right bits now ... my verson's same as yours with an xtra IC tacked onto the end. I'll try using this today and see if it lasts the course!
Which brings me to my apology for a late reply -- afraid sleep overtook me. But today the sun is shining! YAY!
Thanks again, Whip and Sen

Hmm ... curiouser and curiouser
Although the broswer loads more smoothly and -- I notice -- now has it's proper toolbar choices, it still does crash. I'll keep using it for comparisons; it seems to happen if I've been using flash applets on subsequent pages and when I add new tabs to view other pages.
By crash in this case, I mean I get a cannot connect message. But I know the router is still fine n dandy, ping comes up fine, and eMail is fine, too.
Once one IE7 page has crashed the whole thing crashes. I've set popups to ok for my trusted sites, but it still seems to happen.
I've also been lurking on some tekkie boards, but although there's lots of chatter about IE7 crashes, the fixes don't seem all that helpful. IE7 troubleshooter page hand-holds you thru all the nursery slopes, then sends you off into Knowledge Base which is usually too tekkie for me, if you can even find the problem.
Ah, well --- TMFF: Thank Mozilla For Firefox And thank you guys, again. Any more ideas always welcome.

Could be a memory leak problem- as in badly-coded Flash Applets that don't clean up the space they use in memory properly afterwards, or perhaps a problem with the Flash plug-in itself.
Best bet might be to reinstall the Flash plug-in(http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW).

Not to be picky, but that's not a crash- it's just an error . For the record, if your computer has stopped responding or has rebooted itself- that's a crash (basically anything that makes you whimper and then has you scrabbling for backup copies of your system). Don't mean to get at you in particular BB (this is just a bit of an irritation of mine), but when a term becomes so misused like this, it provides no information of any use to those who might want to help.

Actually ... sad to say, it didn't
But I've posted in a couple of solid tekkie sites - where this seems to be a far too common problem. I'll letcha know.
Any other ideas very welcome, though!

Reinstall IE, I'd say- drastic I know, but the only other option I'd suggest (reinstall Windows) is even more so |

Or just uninstall IE period and pop down your local internet cafe to see how the sites look!
On further idea: check your security levels and make sure they are not too high. I've found this can cause problems on Slimbrowser, like taking forever to download some pages like dictionary.com for example.

Thanks for the suggestions, Whip. First of all, as you know I don't have such a thing as a local internet cafe ... and when I'm building or amending client sites I need to do browser checks on a regular basis. Next - my security levels are all on the low side for just that reason. None of my hundreds of virus/trojan scans which are run on a regular basis indicates any problems at all. I do a daily main-registry defrag, and a regular system defrag.
Everything did work fine before I invited IE7 to live here. According to the tekkie 4um posts I've read, I'm not the only one with this problem.
It has occurred to me that BT - my ISP - has been trying desperately to sign up subscribers for new packages and I wouldn't put it past them to subvert connectivity to spur people into changing. My puter's on all day -- and sometimes through the night if I've schedule a full system at 4 AM.
That used to be fine and I rarely had an interruption of service. Who knows?!
What I do know is it's really frustrating to have to keep closing down stuff, reloading etc. Like today I'm researching a piece as I write it - sometimes I have 4-6 tabs going. Firefox handles this fine. If I use IE7, then suddenly all tab-windows hang, and I have to blah-blah-blah ...
Slimbrowser is marginally better, but not much. And that, too, worked lovely before IE7.
Someday people will look back on these problems and guffaw. They probably won't be me ...

It may soon come to that, benj! Thanks, soon as I meet my latest deadlines I'll probably try that. Will letcha know, of course.
Hope the trip continues wonderful

Yeah, but by then they'll be guffawing telepathically.
