It was his pancreas, actually, but no matter.
True story: My father wangled a subscription with front row seats to the Lyric Opera of Chicago for many years - right behind the conductor. Since these were prime seats, often the ones on either side of him were reserved for VIPs. At one production where Pavarotti was singing, Placido Domingo comes in and sits down next to my father. Of course, my father said hello and welcomed him but was a touch too awestruck to say much more. As they watched the production in silence, there was a solo aria by Pavarotti, which apparently moved everyone, including Placido, very much. During the applause, he turned to my father and said "I wish I could sing this part as well as he does"! My father's admiration for Placido was now increased a billion times over, and was unable to tell him that he thought Domingo was the better singer! |
