It's cool, GH. Maybe it's more a matter of listener age and location.

However, to say "English punk music never really caught on in the U.S." is, well, a problem. English punk (more properly, "British Punk") was seminal in the U.S., influencing myriad imitators in the U.S. in both music and fashion.

When I was in high school in 1978, British Punk was in full explosion here (well, there was an enclave in Venice, CA, where I was). There were a bunch of then-local but heavily British-influenced punk bands playing around Hollywood [remember the Germs? Black Flag? The Vandals? Circle Jerks? Fear? And when they were punk, X?].

We were rockin Anarchy waaaaaay back when (though the first Pistols song I heard was "Bodies" in 1978 while a buddy and I were drinking tequila shots in his old treehouse. I had just started 10th grade and was still fairly loyal to the funk of Parliament and Bootsy's Rubberband. But I just couldn't resist 3-chord punk).

While so many rock historians finger Iggy Pop and the Ramones as the beginning of Punk music, that's simply not accurate. Those guys certainly expressed a rawness and a type of teen angst in a different and agressive way (and don't get me wrong: I idolize Iggy's music over the many years and styles -- am I the only person enthralled by Brick by Brick" and "American Ceasar"?). But the Sex Pistols and their progeny introduced a different ethos -- for better or worse -- that creates a clear demarcation in the development of Punk Rock, and by extension, such Heavy Metal subgenres as Thrash Metal.

Not only did British Punk catch on here, it took hold.

George's just jealous because I'm the brains of the group.
I've made all the decisions, even from the beginning when I wasn't in the group.

Well, then maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about. I hadn't even heard of the Sex Pistols until I was in college. I imagined that most Americans would have had a similar inexperience with British punk, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Av contest bump in the road alert!

This weekend I'm finally off for the long awaited New Zealand tour, which includes a look at pengsean in his natural environment. So if the av contest is to continue in my absence, we'll need a volunteer avatyrant for the next three weeks.

Tallying votes and posting results is the only real work involved. The gallery may suffer but it's not critical. I would need copies of the winning avs for history's sake.

Anybody feeling up for a little volunteer work before the holidays?

Off to Bali for two weeks of sun and silliness.

Enjoy your NZ tour, and don't reverse over any penguins
