NZ 1 : 0 England
Not sure if I like the fact that matches like SA / Netherlands are open to inclusion in record books. I can see as time goes on the 'real' records are going to be drowned under a sea of 'titans slaughtering the minnows' records. If you dunno what I'm talking about, Gibbs hit six sixes in one over. And they got 353 off 40 overs. Sure, it sounds fun, but it's not a 'real' match.

OK, situation normal for England again.
Paddy - Saw the last 15 overs of last night's game against Zim. Good stuff, well done. P.S. nice new avatar, if slightly creepy. |

[All this info comes from an auto trip through the Scottish Highlands about ten years ago -- thus the Curtly Ambrose reference -- where a Windies Test match seemed to be on telly everywhere we stopped. During the cocktail hours at the various places we stayed, our kind fellow guests seemed to think this Yank's newfound interest was cute, and tried patiently to teach me the rules. They didn't stick, but we had lovely conversations which then drifted to other subjects.]
[Plus, we vacation every year in Jamaica, among Windies fans. We even got to see our very first cricket venue in person last Dec, when we visited the new Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium, one of the sites for the very upcoming World Cup you mention! They were only having practice before some kind of intermural match, but the facility, the grass and the pitch were all very beautiful. I'd love to be there for a real match, and one day I will.]
Here endeth all I know about cricket. Talk amongst yourselves.
All I know about cricket. They chirp.
EM :)
Yes, but I wish I knew more, because it's quite the beautiful sport, and I love when they come back in the afternoon and the announcer says, "Tea having been taken..." Priceless.
Also, I love baseball, and I understand that cricket is a very close cousin. I will see a match at that new Trelawny stadium one day, I will I will I will. |

How are you guys watching the matches - they are not being televised in Western Australia. |

They're on Sky (Fox/News Ltd etc) here. But, the main problem is they start at 1:30am local time, so I'm only able to catch the end of the 2nd innings. But, obviously if NZ makes it to the final I'll be doing an all-nighter.
Brendon McCullum just got the fastest 50 in World Cup history - off 20 balls. The mighty Canadians were on the receiving end. Another 600+ run match too, they seem to be becoming more and more common these days. |

Look forward to the first NZ/Canada hockey match.
We don't call it 'ice hockey' in Canada. |

Is that because your hockey fields are permanently frozen?
Canada has a few good cricketers, particularly John Davison, Ian Billcliff and Geoff Barnett (who posted the top three scores in last night's match). I wonder how relevant it is that the former is an Aussie and the latter two are Kiwis! |

OK, let's see who can correctly guess the semi-finalists. Here's my analysis (I'm assuming Bangladesh will beat Bermuda tonight and will qualify for the Super 8, so India will be eliminated):-
The Super 8, roughly in order of how good they are at the moment, also taking into account the points they take through from the Group stage:-
AUS SAF SRI NZL WIN ENG BAN IRE
Results taken through into the Super 8 from the Group stage (effectively everyone has already played one match in the Super 8 that counts. Everyone plays each other once each):-
AUS beat SAF NZL beat ENG SRI beat BAN WIN beat IRE
My view...
a) BAN and IRE will be eliminated. That leaves two more of the other six to eliminate, b) AUS will qualify for the semis, and SAF and SRI have a very good chance of qualifying, c) The "middle of the group" matches will prove crucial, i.e., NZL, WIN, ENG, SRI, so, d) NZL has helped it's chances substantially by taking through the win against ENG, and only needs to beat the 'minnows' (IRE and BAN) and win one more match to be pretty safely in the semis, and, e) ENG has an uphill battle and will have to beat both minnows and two more out of AUS, SAF, SRI, WIN to have a reasonable chance of making the semis.
So, I pick:-
AUS SAF SRI NZL
to make the semis. Anyone else wanna guess?
BTW, the bookies tend to agree with me.
There have been two serious upsets so far, and of course anything could happen if there are more upsets, e.g., IRE beat AUS etc. |

Last chance for cricaholics to pick their semi-final qualifiers. Or do I detect a strange reluctance by our Brit fwfrers to participate? |

I'm just glad we got this far.
Barring any serious mishaps, i think you've got the likely semi final line up right there Sean but I can't see NZ getting any further than that - the Aussies are looking ominously good again (their bowlers aren't quite there but what does it matter with their batting line up), South Africa are a very solid outfit and Sri Lanka play each game like it were their last.
One of my best mates is going out next week for three and a half weeks - I can't imagine anything better, regardless of how England fare. |

I stand by my previous guess, but I think the qualifiers will be AUS, SL, Windies, and one of SA and England.
PS Hayden has just hit Taylor for 6, 4, and 6 in 3 balls. Aus 287-5 and still going.
