I don't get HBO, but I'm a fan of the series and watch the reruns on A & E.
I read about the final episode and it sounds fine to me. |

I'll put my hand up as someone that has never seen a minute of this show, just like Lost. 
However, if I was made to watch one or the other, it would be Sopranos. |

Loved it. Brilliant.
But then, I've only seen the last four episodes. Missed the previous six years. And it appears there is a huge hate backlash forming for what David Chase did in the last ten minutes. I thought it was quite clever.
foxy, you're missing something wonderful by eschewing LOST. Maybe you should wait till the series is over and then rent DVDs, but it's the most creative thing on TV these days. The recent season-ender? A mind-bender! Now that ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is gone, LOST and the American OFFICE are the only TV series I watch regularly. |

The final 12 episodes start this week in NZ. It'll be the first time I've watched TV for months. Been looking forward to this all year.
I won't read this thread until it's finished, obviously, so spoil away.  |

We're down to the last four episodes here. Now, I've already mentioned that I don't watch this show, so how do I know that we only have four episodes to go? Because every godammed time there's a break in the programming we get another one of their promotions to the final episodes with their stupid godammed countdown. And each and every promotion is more annoying than the last one.
ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!
You know, I might have actually watched the last episode or two, if the promotions for the shows weren't so irritating. Hell, I might have watched more than one of the early episodes if the promotions for the series hadn't been so infuriating.
(Or not.)

There's a slight thread of similarity between LOST and the final ep of SOPRANOS: the journey IS the point.
LOST has answered many questions, but each answer has brought other questions. That's the whole idea. If anybody says they can tell you what the deal is, they're lying. As of now, it's all just guesswork.
LOST has already announced a specific end date three years from now, and the creators assure us all will be revealed eventually, and that they are NOT in purgatory. Meanwhile, the journey is endlessly fascinating, and I repeat, they pulled out all stops for the season 3 finale. |

The Tony Soprano character interests me. He's an antihero, but if he had no humanity at all, he wouldn't keep our interest.
Tony sees himself as stuck in the way of life he was born into. Yet, he desires a more humane and kinder life. Oddly, his sense of obligations and honor is what keeps him from being able to walk away and go into witness protection.
How is it that Tony, who can kill a traitor to his organization with no compunction at all, is also so tender hearted towards animals, and loves his children so deeply?
I think of when Tony hit the evil Ralph for having beaten to death the naive, trusting stripper who had loved Ralph. I think of when Tony finally killed Ralph when he learned that Ralph had set the barn fire that killed Tony's race horse.
How is it that Tony shows so much tolerance of his sister, Janis, even though he sees that she has Narcissistic Personality Disorder just like their mother had? Tony repeatedly gives Janis opportunities to see her true self and to choose a better path, and she always turns away.
I suppose one of the reasons I find the Tony Soprano character so interesting is because of the way the series examined Tony's relationship with his mother. My mother had NPD (albeit to a less toxic degree than Tony's mom) and I know how it can warp one's interaction with the outer world and sense of self.
One of my favorite episodes was when Dr. Melfi had those revenge dreams after she was raped. She knew that if she told Tony about the attack, that he would kill the perp for her. She contented herself with the knowledge that she could do so and did not succumb to the temptation.
I think the ending was absolutely brilliant. I can't think of how it could possibly be better. (I downloaded the final scene from Youtube.) I thought the timing and everything was just perfect. I like that each fan can decide for themselves what happened to Tony. |

Hooray. Finally talk about the final episode and the series.
Not sure if I'll have spoilers, but best not keep reading if you don't like having things spoil (like milk, eggs, or your mobster story series).
I liked the way it was left kinda up in the air. My husband said there is talk that the black out is the audience getting whacked. But, I think it was just a clever way of saying life goes on and you will see the Sopranos again sometime in a movie or HBO special.
I loved the Phil kill. Just perfect.
And I was fine with them all kinda carrying on with their lives, which is a majority of what they do, everyday stuff, with crime and some hits mixed in.
I liked that Tony got his information from the FBI guy. And his reaction when he heard Phil was whacked. Too funny.
I was very pleased. And it's what I expected.
I agree with your analysis of Tony, too. We have to like him. He's a killer, but he feels. He tries to have justice. His justice. And he has a temper, but he tries to be as fair as he can be.
I enjoyed spending the last few years with him and his crew and family.

OK, Kiwis finally got to finish the series (last week actually).
Excellent drama, The Sopranos is probably my favourite drama series ever. It's the only thing I've watched on TV this year (apart from the occasional documentary).
I liked the ending. There's an analysis of the final scene at Wiki which sums it up nicely. Ending the series with a moment's uncertainty on Tony's face when he hears the door open - but before he knows who is walking through the door - was a good decision. The point being that it could have been anyone; his daughter arriving to join him for dinner... or someone coming in to whack him (the mystery guy in the bathroom providing the uncertainty).
I'd actually have been disappointed if they'd wrapped up every loose thread, as it stands there were plenty (Sylvio in a coma, the truce with the Lupertazzi family was in it's infancy, the pending trial following Carlo's testimony etc).
Great stuff. |

Just got the final episode this week. Definite SPOILERS here.
What I liked was that it did not try and tie up 'loose ends'. There were other story lines building up - like Anthony Jnr's fascination with terrorism and the diversionary tactic of Tony getting him involved with a film production. Also, the FBI character - what was that scene with him and his fellow FBI agent all about?
The tension in the cafe scene was very well done too. Knowing it is the last episode the audience is expecting something dramatic (or at least I was). Tony reacts to people coming in, walking past etc just like the audience does. And the daughter taking ages to parallel park her car leaving you to think she might miss out on being massacred.
And what was the deal with the cat! Chris reincarnated.... |
