Tonite's viewing... 'The Bourne Ultimatum'(needed Netflix to finally clear it)
When it's all said and done, Matt Damon will be uttered in the same breath as... Nicholson, DeNiro, DuVall, and that guy who played the Godfather, as the best actors ever(obviously, many other actor/examples have been left off the list, but he'll still be there).
I don't glean this from just this particular viewing. Remember his role in 'School ties?' Well then, we go way back...
Managed some superlative(I exaggerate, of course) reviews from the viewing, hope the Merps agree... the thing is...
I've never seen a BAD Matt Damon-driven flick(Damn, I forgot about 'Dogma')... When we look back 20+ years from now(Hopefully, I'll still be Fwiffering), Ben Affleck will either be a great director or a punchline, but Mr. Damon will be the Grey-haired, possibly balding gentleman we look forward to seeing in any given film ...
I say Mr. like this guy is older than I am...
Hey, Randall, did Clooney ever say what it was like to work with Matt? |

| Yeah but he's also the guy in 'The Departed' that couldn't accurately play the very same accent he actually grew up with. |

Apparently Hilary is holding out for the role of the brother.

I don't know. For me, Matt Damon is always Matt Damon in movies. I can't get over his strange look -- big forehead. I don't think he's terrible. And the Bourne movies are definitely entertaining. The best movie for me with Matt was Good Will Hunting, but that was before I really knew who he was.
Same kinda goes for Leonardo. I liked him in Departed, though. And he was good in This Boy's Life and What's Eating Gilbert Grape (when he was much younger).
And don't even get me started on Keanu Reeves.

I liked the Matt Damon puppet in Team America that just kept saying "Matt Damon" over and over again.

Well, if he were on a committee, he's be the natural choice for Chair.

I like Matt Damon, and I am one of the handful of people who loved Dogma. I think the world is divided into those who hate it and those who love it. Damon personally seems well-balanced and has a healthy sense of humor about himself, and as he's proven in the Kevin Smith films and the video discussed here, doesn't take himself too seriously. Having said that, I don't much care for the Bourne films and despite my love for Brad Pitt and George Clooney, am not a huge fan of the Ocean's films, though I understand why that group enjoys doing them. As was the Rat Pack version of Eleven, they seem rather self-indulgent to me.
Damon was wonderful in Good Will Hunting, as was Robin Williams, who always surprises me in his dramatic roles, though I shouldn't be by now. The script was intelligent and ultimately full of hope. Ben was good in that too, and I still hold out hope for him, now as a director. I have to agree with Montgomery, though, when she said that it's sometimes hard to get past him as "Matt Damon," but he did so and I especially like him in Courage Under Fire, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. He'll have to go back to that to be considered one of the best of his generation, though.
I'm weary of Leonardo DiCaprio. He comes off to me as bland too often, and I'm not sure why Scorsese seems to consider him the actor to have, which he apparently does since I see there are four upcoming Scorsese projects in which DiCaprio is listed, but then the next couple of years is going to glut us on Leo. He was fantastic in Gilbert Grape, good in Titanic, fine in The Aviator, okay in Gangs of New York, but honestly, my film of the week was The Departed, and I hated it. I just did not care about any of those characters, and I wanted to. I just wasn't sure about whom I was supposed to care. Marky Mark was pretty good in it, though.
But then, my pick of the litter has always been Johnny Depp. |

The question that started this thread was "Is Matt Damon the new DeNiro?" I answer that question with a No. And wonder why someone would think that.
DeNiro has demonstrated the ability to take on many different roles and really take them on. Become the person. Change his look if necessary.
Sean Penn is more of a DeNiro type, I think. A really great actor, who becomes his role.
Christian Bale shows these qualities, too.
I also think Ryan Gosling has the ability to do that. And Johnny Depp is very good as well. Ed Norton? Daniel Day-Lewis.
I'm probably forgetting a lot of great actors here.
I even think Leonardo in his earlier roles (and yes, I did like him in Departed. He was the one I rooted for. I was not confused.) has shown some of the DeNiro ability. Gilbert Grape. Basketball Diaries. This Boy's Life.
I don't see it in Matt Damon. A capable actor? Yes. Fine. I don't mind him. (I thought The Talented Mr. Ripley was terrible, by the way!!!) But, I don't see where one says he is the next DeNiro. I don't see the similarities really at all.
And I think the best part of Good Will Hunting was Robin Williams. I liked Matt. And I give him credit for writing, but he was just good. Robin made that film for me.
How do you like them apples?

More proof that Damon has a healthy sense of humor and doesn't take himself too seriously (Affleck counts here too):
The take-off scene in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, wherein they are supposedly filming Good Will Hunting 2: Hunt Season.
Clark: [during filming for Good Will Hunting 2] You're just no longer any good, Will Hunting. Now how do *you* like *them apples*? Ben Affleck: [in huddle with Damon] I don't like the sound of them apples, Will. What are we gonna do? Matt Damon: Chucky, it's hunting season. [Will pulls out his shotgun and blows the guy away] Ben Affleck: Applesauce. Bitch. |

I've got one - who saw the interview with him on The Daily Show right after the last Bourne movie came out? Jon asked him about how the movie was going, especially after some of the other third parts of trilogy movies hadn't been received so well. His answer was "Look, I don't know if the movie is really all that great, I'm just thrilled that it didn't suck".

That's very funny. I had not seen it. But, I don't question that Matt is funny. Or a good guy. I once again refer to the beginning of the thread -- Is Matt Damon the new DeNiro?
And still I answer, "Nope, he's not."
EM :)
WOW! That's incredible stuff, I'd never seen the Sarah Silverman take on this subject. I will swear to the day I croak that this guy refuses to take himself seriously in the wake of his fame, but here's the thing...
Matt Damon, as I described him in the initial post, is not DeNiro... Not yet! But... he will be. He will be the guy we all remember years from now, the jack Nicholson of his day, who stepped out from beyond his fame to make touching little videos, like the one I just viewed, in order to separate himself from the common actor(Paul Giamatti comes to mind). He will be remembered as one of the best, I have no doubt, tho... all points of view on this subject are swirling around my head...
