| This was so horrific that it even made the news here. Disgusting! |

Except now there are starting to be rumors that she was complicit. And I've heard some radio bulletins starting to use the word alleged. Personally I think we should wait for all the facts before we rush to judgement. At least all the children have been taken into care.

| Sure, but assuming it happened at all (i.e. to any of the children), it's beyond belief whatever the details are. |

Funny though it may seem Baffy, when we know a man kept his daughter in a cellar for 20 years and fathered 6 or 7 children with her, I'm pretty comfortable about "rushing to judgment".

| And one has to wonder how 'complicit' someone could be in a situation like that, rather than psychologically terrorised. |

Well, the latest is the scumbag has admitted it ... so rush away!
I'm just ultra-cautious when a news story is automatically sensationalized before we get all the facts. It's the kind of borderline territory that leads to pediatrician's getting stoned to death because they have the same name as a pedophile. [Not that anyone should be stoned to death, imho.]
I still can't figure out why the creep's wife would have been so passive about all this. I mean when kids start turning up on the doorstep, at what stage do you NOT become suspicious? And where were the authorities during the past 20 years? Why was everything accepted at face value?
It's beyond obscene.

There's a syndrome that happens to captors after a while... I forget the name of it right now... but what used to be thought of as complicit has now been identified as this syndrome - for many cases. I'd be willing to bet that this could easily be one of these cases. |

Yep, although I don't think this was a case of that.
I agree with B.B. about the mother. How hard did she try to find the daughter? When the babies turned up, did she ask the whole street (and town) if they had seen her daughter, and look on the C.C.T.V. footage from the adjoining areas? Was there no banging? And did she not wonder what was in the cellar? |

Bingo!
Thing is, with Stockholm, the captives often begins to identify and sympathize with their captors. I'm not sure if this is the case here or not.

Just to illustrate the extreme nature of this story, the above was the headline for it on the I.T.V. news just now. Even they are unable to contextualise it in any way.
And Natascha Kampusch is not even the only other case like this in Austria. Just think who could be imprisoned in any of our own streets right now. It's terrifying. |

Well, this is just a wild guess, but could it be because she did not want to believe her husband had incarcerated her daughter in the cellar and was having incestuous relations with her?
There may be some people who would prefer to blank out that possibility.

| Yep, I also think that it may well be that when the possibility presented itself to her (probably well before Elisabeth was eighteen), she just decided to decide that it wasn't the case. |

I'd say the wife would have to be substantially fucked in the head. Locked in her own world and blocking out everything else. She also 'failed to notice' that he'd been feeding many other mouths for up to 24 years, and removing their garbage.
And I wonder why the captives didn't jump him while he was visiting and escape.
And why he never had a vasectomy.
(I actually think that what he did was worse than if he'd killed them all).
The shrinks are gonna have a field day with this one. |
