You'd think, as long as I've been on the net (since late 1995), I'd have tried this before. But NOOooooo. I've just always used Internet Explorer, since it came installed on my computers. However, lately, IE has been giving me problems, especially with the IMDB. So I went looking for a different browser and downloaded Mozilla Firefox. I have to say, so far, I REALLY like it. I like being able to open tabs in the same window, I like the spaciousness and simplicity of it, and I like that it doesn't fault out on the IMDB. So, I'm a late bloomer. Just wanted to say that. |

I like Firefox, too. Whipper, however, convinced me to try SlimBrowser - which I've been using for a few months now. It's really friendly, but I've noticed lately that sometimes it can't cope with certain Flash coding; it's also been collapsing shut for no apparent reason. I'm also re-discovering the 'joys' of the new version of IE. I dunno -I wish they'd all get together and work on stabilizing all browser functionality. How hard could it be, she asks innocently knowing only a pinch more than nothing

One thing that is terribly annoying to web programmers and designers is the differences in the way browsers interpret style codes, so that we have to design with each one in mind for optimum viewability.
I do find Firefox to be faster than MSIE. I find Thunderbird to be less problem-plagued than Outlook, also. |

I've also been having problems with Slimbrowser recently - namedly really slow download times for some sites. Maybe I changed a setting or something?!
Opera is also worth checking out as it has some nice features. It used to download images really slowly on my machine but now its solved that problem somehow.
I think it's a good idea to have all these browsers on the computer, update them regularly and check their latest performance.

I switched back to the new IE after using Firefox for a very long time. You might want to give it another try.
My original problem with the old IE was page typeface/font. No matter what I did with font size in View or elsewhere, it always looked like I was viewing 24 pt font or larger! What ever they did to the new version changed all that. It is soooo easy to add new tabs to the toolbar, too. |

Yep, I like IE7. No problems with it at all. |

Don't laugh at me Lemmy!
It's taken me ages to get it to run at all on this Commodore 64.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, Whipper. I paid extra on the computer before this one (bought in 2002) for the tech guy to put 98SE on it. This one was already loaded, so I was forced to go to Windows XP, but I still hate it. |

Now that we're on to operating systems, can anyone help me with my languidity problem?
We have Windows XP (Home) and it means we all have separate accounts. So we switch the PC on and then log on to our own user account. The trouble is, even first thing in the morning when the computer's fresh as a daisy it takes an age for everything to load and check itself out. I timed it this morning, and it took 2 mins 50 seconds (compared with maybe 20-30 secs for my office laptop). Having Norton antivirus must slow it down, as it insists on lining up everything else and pressing a stethoscope against their scrawny chests. I've tried stripping everything non-essential from my personal startup sequence (duplicate AOL shortcuts, that sort of thing ) but I find there's also a general startup with even more stuff best suited to a jumble sale. It includes a massive Programs folder with dozens of items in it. I tried moving it but the computer says "no". Is the answer to go through the contents of the startup programs folder and get rid of the flotsam? |

That should help. You might also want to uninstall any of these many programs populating the the Programs menu that you don't use anymore- the slow speed could simply be down to not having enough free disk space. |

Thanks benj. I'll give it a try. I blame the kids: three lots of digital camera software, Bearshare ( ), music downloading software... bah, humbug!
Edit:oh, wow. A result! Remember: before today's spring clean it took 2 mins 50 secs to log on. After the first blitz my time was reduced to 2 mins. After a second blast, getting rid of a lot more clutter, we have a splendid new record: 40 seconds! And that's before I start uninstalling unwanted programs. What joy!
Further edit: And the 400GB external hard drive I bought this afternoon should help too!
Now, how many movies does this thing reckon to take....? |

Koli, I didn't know you had children. Somehow I never pictured you as the daddy type. You just don't seem tired, frazzled and worn out enough? |

Possibly I'm not taking my parenting duties seriously enough (though come to think of it I did spend much of the day feeding the washing machine and pegging clothes on the line). But I find that when I'm so tired I've almost lost the power of speech I can still read things here and occasionally even tap out a few characters on the keyboard in reply. Blimey, that was an effort; must be bedtime. |
